History and Origin

Of the four hemlock species found in North America, only Eastern hemlock is indigenous in eastern Canada. In Quebec, among all conifers, it is the less cold resistant. It tolerates well shade and prefers humid and fresh environment. Medium-sized tree reaching 30 m in height, with a 100 cm diameter and 600 years in longevity. The crown is large, dense and conical. Branches are fine and horizontally distributed. Needles are flat, finely dentate, with a blunt tip and a short petiole. Female cones are small, ovoid and sharp, with blunt scale and violet brown color. They stay on the tree till following spring. Bark is grayish brown, scaly and deeply furrowed.
