Plant description

Latin Name: Juniperus virginiana
English Name: Virginian cedarwood
French Name: Cèdre de Virginie
Family: Cupressaceae
Origin: United States, Canada

History and Origin

Slow growth conical or cylindrical shaped tree. Around 20 years, it only measures approximately 4 meters, but it can grow up to 15 to 20 meters as it becomes a mature tree. Its blue fruit ripens in spring during the first year. It grows primarily in limestone regions. This tree is the shelter and food for a rare butterfly in Canada called juniper hairstreak (Callophrys gryneus).
