Lavender essential oils: choose wisely according to your needs
Think you know everything about lavender? Discover the secrets of its different essential oils and find the one that's right for you!
When we talk about lavender in aromatherapy, we immediately think of its sweet southern fragrance, its soothing effects, and its many benefits for the body and mind. But did you know that there are several types of lavender essential oil? And that each has its own specific properties?
Here is a short guide to help you see things more clearly and make the right choice, according to your desires or needs.
v True lavender ( Lavandula angustifolia ssp. angustifolia )
This is the star of lavenders in aromatherapy. It grows at high altitudes, where the air is cooler and the conditions harsher. The result: an essential oil of great finesse, very rich in esters (notably linalyl acetate), known for their calming effects.
What she does best:
- Soothes stress and anxiety
- Promotes good sleep
- Soothes minor burns, stings and irritations
- Suitable for the whole family, even toddlers.
We love it for its gentleness, its delicate floral scent, and its versatility. It's a true everyday essential, perfect for use both in a diffuser and on the skin.
v Lavender ( Lavandula angustifolia ssp. officinalis )
Often confused with true lavender (and for good reason, they are the same species!), common lavender grows a little lower down, in the plains or at medium altitudes. Its composition is similar, but slightly less concentrated in esters, which makes it a little less "refined," but still very effective.
What she does best:
- It remains very relaxing and healing.
- It is perfect for everyday use (in cosmetics, skincare, massage oils, etc.)
- Its cost is often more affordable than that of true lavender.
👉 In summary: if you are looking for quality lavender, but at a slightly lower price, this one is ideal.
v Lavandin ( Lavandula x intermedia )
Here, we're talking about a natural cross between true lavender and spike lavender. Widely cultivated, it produces many flowers, and therefore a more abundant essential oil... but also one with a stronger camphor scent.
What she does best:
- Relaxes muscles after exertion
- Relieves cramps and tension
- It also serves as a natural insect repellent
- Very useful in household products (soaps, sprays, laundry detergents…)
Its fragrance is stronger and a little less subtle, but for "practical" use, it's an excellent choice.
v Spike lavender ( Lavandula latifolia )
Last in line, but not least. Spike lavender grows at low altitudes and produces a more powerful essential oil, notably thanks to its richness in camphor and 1,8-cineole.
What she does best :
- In case of a wasp sting, burn or bite (even from a jellyfish!)
- To clear the airways
- As skincare after sunburn
Note: it is more stimulating and less gentle than the others, so it should be avoided in young children or in case of sensitivity to camphor.
