Lavender essential oils: choose wisely according to your needs

When we talk about lavender in aromatherapy, we immediately think of its sweet southern scent, its soothing effects, and its myriad benefits for the body and mind. But did you know that there are several types of lavender essential oils? And that each has its own unique characteristics?

Here is a short guide to help you see things more clearly and make the right choice, depending on your desires and needs.

v  True lavender ( Lavandula angustifolia ssp. angustifolia )

This is the star of lavender in aromatherapy. It grows at high altitudes, where the air is cooler and conditions harsher. The result: a very fine essential oil, very rich in esters (notably linalyl acetate), known for their calming effects.

What she does best:

  • Soothes stress and anxiety
  • Promotes good sleep
  • Soothes minor burns, stings and irritations
  • Suitable for the whole family, even toddlers

We love it for its softness, delicate floral scent, and versatility. It's a true everyday ally, used both in a diffuser and on the skin.

v  Lavender ( Lavandula angustifolia ssp. officinalis )

Often confused with true lavender (and for good reason, they are the same species!), officinal lavender grows a little lower, on the plains or at medium altitudes. Its composition is similar, but slightly less concentrated in esters, which makes it a little less "fine", but still very effective.

What she does best:

  • It remains very relaxing and healing.
  • It is perfect for everyday use (in cosmetics, skin care, massage oils, etc.)
  • Its cost is often more affordable than that of true lavender.

👉 Bottom line: If you're looking for quality lavender, but at a slightly lower price, this one is ideal.

v  Lavandin ( Lavandula x intermedia )

This is a natural cross between true lavender and spike lavender. Widely cultivated, it produces a large number of flowers, and therefore a more abundant essential oil... but also a more camphorated one.

What she does best:

  • Relaxes muscles after exercise
  • Relieves cramps and tension
  • Also serves as a natural insect repellent
  • Very useful in household products (soaps, sprays, detergents, etc.)

Its scent is stronger and a little less subtle, but for "practical" use, it's an excellent choice.

v  Spike lavender ( Lavandula latifolia )

Last of the bunch, but not least. Spike lavender grows at lower altitudes and produces a more potent essential oil, thanks in part to its richness in camphor and 1,8-cineole.

What she does best :

  • In case of a wasp sting, burn or bite (even a jellyfish bite!)
  • To clear the airways
  • In skin care after sunburn

Note: it is more stimulating and less gentle than the others, so avoid in young children or in cases of sensitivity to camphor.
