L'huile essentielle de thuya : un héritage de la forêt québécoise

Thuja essential oil: a legacy from the Quebec forest

Eastern white cedar (Thuja occidentalis), also known as arborvitae, is one of Quebec's most iconic trees. Present in our forests for millennia, it holds an important place in the history of First Nations and is an integral part of our forest heritage.

A Tree steeped in history

Long before the arrival of Europeans, thuja was used by Indigenous peoples in various forms. Its history is also associated with the scurvy episode that is said to have afflicted Jacques Cartier's crew in 1536. According to historical accounts, a thuja-based preparation reportedly helped to restore several sailors.

From Forest to Still

Thuja essential oil is produced from the leafy branches of the tree. These are harvested and then steam-distilled to extract the aromatic compounds.

This produces an essential oil with a fresh, woody, and resinous scent that evokes the cedar forests and undergrowth of Quebec.

An essential oil to be used with caution

Unlike many conifer essential oils, thuja essential oil is rich in thujone, a molecule that requires certain precautions for use.

Its use is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, young children, or people suffering from epilepsy or neurological disorders. It should not be ingested without the advice of a qualified professional.

A few ideas to enjoy its scent

Thuja essential oil is primarily valued for its unique aromatic profile. Its woody, green, and resinous scent instantly evokes Quebec's cedar forests.

Here are a few simple ways to enjoy it:

  • Add a few drops to your wash water to naturally scent your floors and create a pleasant forest atmosphere in the house. For a ready-to-use solution, also discover our Spring Clean blend, carefully developed for daily cleaning.
  • Place 1 or 2 drops on unglazed ceramic beads and place them in a wardrobe, hallway, or any other poorly ventilated room. If you appreciate fresh, woody scents, our Wardrobe blend will also charm you.
  • Integrate a few drops into your forest essential oil blends to add a woody and deep note to the scents of balsam fir, black spruce, or white pine.
  • A few drops on an absorbent material placed near entry points can help deter ants due to its strong smell.

As with any essential oil, a few drops are usually enough to fully enjoy its aromatic character.
