Histoire et origine

Myrrh is an aromatic gum resin obtained by the myrrh tree (Commiphora myrrha or Commiphora molmol). It comes from the Latin word murra or myrrha, which has the idea of bitterness (one of the component of myrrh scent). Myrrh history is as old as frankincense history. Egyptians have known it since four thousand years. It was used for embalming. In the Bible, myrrh is one of the main component of a sacred anointing oil, but it is also a perfume erotically charged. It symbolises deep intimacy, and possibly even a passionate love for Jesus which is itself our myrrh. It is also a part of the gift offered to Jesus by the Three kings. The book The Song of Songs is more than just a book of eroticism, it also represents the love of the Church towards Jesus. Greeks flavored their wine with myrrh and they associated it to the legend of Myrrha.

Oil Characteristics :	Slightly viscous liquid with a dark yellow to brown colour. Its odor is woody and resinous.

Myrrh is related to peace and tranquility. It balances heart chakra and calms anxiety. It helps dissipate the feeling of sadness and to release emotions to go forward in life.

Uses

Perfumery

Heart note. Myrrh is used in the preparation of perfume.

Pharmaceutic

It is used to treat oral thrush (yeast infection) in infants.

In the United-States, myrrh had already been in the official pharmacopeia: it was particularly employed as a mouthwash. In Europe, it was added to many medicinal preparations to treat inflammation of the mucous membrane of mouth and throat. Many toothpastes sold in natural food stores contain myrrh.

Synergy

With spike lavender: healing and antalgic.

With labdanum cistus: healing.

With bay laurel: anti-infectious.

With lemon verbena and rosemary (ct. verbenone): endocrine regulator.

Note

Commiphora myrrha Essential oil can solidify or crystallize at room temperature. This does not affect the quality and the properties of the product. Just warm the bottle in your hands, under running warm water or in a water bath for a few minutes so the oil liquefies again.

Do not use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It would have a stimulating effect on the uterus and thus would be abortive.
