History and Origin: Lavender is a shrub native to the arid, sunny hillsides of southern France and other Mediterranean regions. It has a long-standing reputation as a popular plant with many uses. Known since ancient Roman times for its fragrance and aromatic qualities, its name comes from the Latin lavare , which means "to wash." The Romans used it to perfume linen, enhance baths and thermal baths, but also to relieve certain digestive discomforts, as a cosmetic treatment and to keep insects away.
