Native mainly to New Caledonia , niaouli ( Melaleuca quinquenervia , formerly Melaleuca leucadendron ) is a tree of the Myrtaceae family, a close cousin of the tea tree and cajeput. In local cultures, it is simply called "niaouli", and it occupies an important place in medicinal and ritual traditions. The use of niaouli essence is not new. As early as the 19th century, it was mentioned in official documents, such as the French Official Journal of September 9, 1875, which stated that niaouli, like the cajeput of the Moluccas, was used in the production of cajeput essence , used in particular in perfumery and medicine. Over time, niaouli oil has gained worldwide recognition, particularly in aromatherapy, where it is valued for its gentle yet effective action. It is now distilled mainly in New Caledonia and Madagascar , and used both in diffusion and local application. |
