Nutmeg grows wild in the Moluccas Islands of Indonesia, where it is also cultivated. It is also cultivated in Sri Lanka and Grenada. It is the fruit of a tree that can reach 20 meters in height with smooth gray-brown bark, dense foliage, and small, matte yellow flowers. Nutmeg is, of course, widely recognized as a culinary spice. It is used grated to flavor meats and soups, as well as curries. In French cuisine, it is notably used to flavor gratin dauphinois. The therapeutic properties of nutmeg have also been recognized for centuries, particularly in supporting the digestive system. |
