English Name: Copaiba copal tree (balsam)
French Name: Copahu, Capaïer, copayer, copahier or baume de copaïba
Family: Caesalpiniaceae
Origin: Brazil

History and Origin

Resin from the trees is harvested by the means of an incision, like in harvesting rubber, made on wild trees of the Amazonian rainforest, mainly in Brazil, but also in Peru, Colombia and Venezuela. Native Amerindians from that region have used it since immemorial times as a topical medicine.

Extraction: Steam distillation
Oil Characteristics: A slightly viscous liquid of a yellow-brown color with a light, spicy and resinous smell.
Properties: Powerful anti-inflammatory+++, antiseptic, cicatrizant, general tonic, energising.
Indications: Catarrhal urinary infection, urethritis+++, catarrhal bronchopulmonary infection++, wounds, ulcers+.

Uses

Perfumery

Clearly a base note. Combined with more volatile oils, it acts as a perfume fixative.

Pharmaceutical

This oil is for the sports people. Highly anti-inflammatory, it relieves tendon, joint and muscle pains as well as muscle soreness after intense physical effort. It is also used to treat a certain number of skin problems (mycoses, dermatosis, etc.).

Safety

  • No contraindication known under normal physiological doses.
  • Use the oil diluted or make a skin test before using it for a short period of time.
