Plant description

Latin Name : Origanum vulgare var. kaliteria
English Name : Oregano Kaliteri
French Name : Origan Kaliteri
Family : Lamiaceae
Origin : Bolivia

History and Origin

Originating from Europe, oregano has been very well exported in the Middle East. Oregano was known by peoples in antiquity for its pronounced taste and its medicinal virtues. It was well-known for two of its properties: as a protective but also as a love potion. First of all, oregano is a very nice plant, according by its Greek etymology: "oros" and "ganos" which can be translated as "mountain ornament”. There are some thirty varieties growing everywhere in Europe.

Oregano Kaliteri is cultivated in the Bolivian high plateau, in Latin America. Climatic conditions have led to the development of a unique variety of common oregano, with a special biochemical composition, much more balanced than common oregano dominated by a very high level in carvacrol, a powerful molecule in the phenol family which gives oreganos their powerful antibacterial effect but also their irritant power and their hepatotoxicity over a long period of time. Oregano Kaliteri will therefore be active while being better tolerated, equally by the skin or in internal use, than common oregano or oregano compactum.
