History and Origin
Ocimum tenuiflorum is an annual plant that grows up to 70 centimeters in height. Its small flowers are white and purple. The plant is native to India, but it is now cultivated in all over Southeast Asia. Holy basil is a very important plant in the traditional Indian medicine. "Tulsi" is the name in Hindi and means "incomparable". In India, holy basil is often planted in front of houses and temples to bring divine protection.
